Do Kegels Work for Men?

Method: In all, 55 men aged > 20 years who had experienced erectile dysfunction for ≥6 months were recruited for a randomized controlled study with a cross-over arm. Men with a low testosterone level, urological abnormalities, previous prostate surgery (except TURP), and men with a neurological deficit were excluded from the study. The study was conducted at The Somerset Nuffield Hospital, Taunton, and 55 men meeting the inclusion criteria were randomized to receive either pelvic floor muscle exercises enhanced by manometric biofeedback and lifestyle changes (intervention group, 28 men) or lifestyle changes only (controls, 27).
Results: After 6 months, blind assessment showed that 40% of men had regained normal erectile function, 35.5% improved but 24.5% failed to improve.
Conclusion: Pelvic floor exercises should be considered as a first-line approach for men seeking long-term resolution of their erectile dysfunction.
Pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation for patients with lifelong premature ejaculation: a novel therapeutic approach, Sage Journals, February 2014 (Link)
Method: We treated 40 men with lifelong premature ejaculation, reporting, a baseline intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) ≤ 1 min, with 12-week pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation.
Results: At the end of the treatment, 33 (82.5%) of the 40 patients gained control of their ejaculatory reflex, with a mean IELT of 146.2 s (range: 123.6–152.4 s). A total of 13 out of 33 (39%) patients were evaluated at 6 months follow up, and they maintained a significant IELT (112.6 s) compared with their initial IELT (mean 39.8 s).
Conclusion: The results obtained in our subjects treated with pelvic floor rehabilitation are promising. This therapy represents an important cost reduction compared with the standard treatment (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Based on the present data, we propose pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation as a new, viable therapeutic option for the treatment of premature ejaculation.
There are many more studies out there that prove the efficacy of Kegel exercises for men. In fact, there are always recommended for men who underwent a prostatectomy (removal of the prostate) because they work. If they can help men recover strength after such a surgery, it’s easy to see how they can help men build stronger pelvic floor muscles, which inevitably result in stronger erections and more controllable ejaculations.
